United Nations Security Council: Eritrea, 1972
The Eritrean War of Independence was a conflict between 1961 and 1991 which took place primarily between Eritrean independence fighters and the line of Ethiopian governments. Spurred on due to discontent with the Ethiopian control of the Eritrean region, the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) formed and started to fight against what was then the Ethiopian empire. For a decade, conflict commenced and the ELF and Ethiopian government continued to fight with nearby countries supporting either group.
However, in 1972, a major shift occurred in the war. The leadership of the Eritrean Liberation Front started to split from its base multiple factions divided along religious identities that eventually came to form the Eritrean People's Liberation Front started a civil war within the independence groups. It is at this point in the now long-standing and bitter war the committee will start. The previously clear groups have now dissolved into parties with different desires and methods. The people of both Eritrea and Ethiopia have suffered already for a decade with no end in sight and the United Nations Security Council now has a chance to intervene. Creating an alternative history, delegates will have the opportunity to investigate the complexity of Eritrean independence in the middle of the historic conflict. While in crisis, delegates will attempt to productively aid affected people and work towards a swift and safe end to the conflict. After the primary period of crisis elapses, delegates should expect to ensure the sovereignty of the resulting parties and work towards establishing secure legislation to create a norm of cooperation throughout the region. The committee will start in 1972 and shall span multiple years of conflict, and resolution.
This will be a double-delegation committee.
