Ad-Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General
ChoMUN XXIX’s Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General has been specially designed to give experienced crisis delegates a unique and exciting experience. The committee topic will remain a secret until shortly before the conference, at which point the background guide will be released and delegates will have the opportunity to engage in committee-specific preparation. Due to the nature of the committee, delegates will be forced to think on their feet, and their crisis skills will be constantly tested. As the flagship committee of ChoMUN XXIX, the Secretary-General’s Ad Hoc promises the most innovative crisis experience on the collegiate competitive circuit and one that will challenge your preconceptions of traditional crisis Model UN.
When preparing for this committee, the executives encourage delegates to focus on tangible skills, including but not limited to: note and directive writing, speeches, directive mergers, and on-your-feet thinking. While several hints for this committee will be released over the days leading to the start of ChoMUN XXIX, the executives would caution against relying too heavily upon them; they are not meant to be easily interpreted, as that would ruin the secret!
This is an advanced committee. We highly recommend that delegates have experience competing on crisis-style committees on the collegiate circuit before joining this committee.
Pietro Stabile
Executive
Pietro is a third-year at the College majoring in Computer Science (because he likes computer science) and Economics (because he likes being employed). He hails from Barrington, Illinois, a profoundly unremarkable suburb of Chicago. Last year, Pietro served as Chair for Not That Castro: Cipriano Castro's Cabinet, 1902 at ChoMUN XXVIII, and previously as an Assistant Chair for the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis at ChoMUN XXVII. He also serves as Under-Secretary-General for Regional Bodies and has chaired the NATO committee at UChicago’s high school conference, where he thoroughly enjoyed the gavel’s power — don’t worry, he promises not to overdo it for ChoMUN.
Surprisingly, Pietro also has a life outside Model UN — he performs research for a lab at UChicago, does data analysis for the environmental sustainability club, is an avid lm and digital photographer, and enjoys cooking Italian food to convince himself he is cultured. Pietro cannot wait to bask in the Ad Hoc’s mysterious aura, and he looks forward to the tenacity and creativity delegates will bring to the table.
Send your questions, concerns, and cat or dog pictures — but not both — to pietrostabile@uchicago.edu. Pietro never reads his emails, but he swears he’ll read yours.
Chris Tien
Executive
Chris is a third-year student at the University of Chicago studying linguistics and architectural studies, while also doing the pre-med track. Coming from Taiwan, he has a wide range of interests, and MUN is a major part of it. His MUN journey started in middle school, when he was 13 years old, attending his first conference with barely any experience with the ROP or draft resolutions. Over the years, Chris gained his confidence and slowly took on the role of a chair and now a crisis director!
Outside of MUN, Chris engages in his Taiwanese culture, hosting events every quarter that hopes to bring everyone together; he enjoys dancing and working as a photographer, those being his creative outlet in a relatively study-focused environment; he also works at the hospital to perform interviews for a research study; finally, he dabbles in origami, and likes to write blog posts about art and any other topics with his photos!
Feel free to reach out to Chris at christien@uchicago.edu to promote your personal interests and hobbies—Chris will make sure to read your email thoroughly and reply!! He hopes that everyone in the ad-hoc committee can have a great time and allow their creativity to overflow!
Rudra Patel
Executive
Rudra is a third year student studying Economics and Data Science, with a minor in Chemistry. His MUN journey started in college as an AC, where he enjoyed acting out skits for Mom, I’m in Love With an Alien: CSICOP, 1978, at ChoMUN XXVII. Since then, he has served as a CD for Byzantine Brilliance: Court of Emperor Justinian at ChoMUN XXVIII. He is super excited to continue Crisis Directing at the highest level yet!
In his free time, Rudra loves to play sports, mainly badminton and football, along with folding origami, taking part in environmental organisations, and participating in UChicago Survivor. Rudra cannot wait to be your Crisis Director for the Ad Hoc of ChoMUN XXIX!
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Rudra at rudraspatel@uchicago.edu.
