Somehow Napoleon has Returned: The Second French Empire, 1853

In the wake of the French Revolution, the people of the new French nation were looking for change, in particular a move towards democracy and stability. However, the nascent state became anything but stable, as the French empire under Napoleon Bonaparte reflected a return to absolute, with Napoleon taking the title of emperor. After the end of Napoleon’s rule, the French returned to a monarchical society with the establishment of the House of Bourbon, only to overthrow this new monarchy and establish the 2nd French Republic. However, this Republic was short-lived, and in 1851 a coup resulted in the overthrow of the 2nd French Republic, with Napoleon III establishing the 2nd French Empire and declaring himself emperor in 1852.

Under the rule of Napoleon III, many changes took place, both within France and abroad. In France, the most ambitious project that Napoleon III undertook was the Haussmannization of Paris. Looking to establish France as a modern nation, Napoleon III wanted to establish the modernity of France’s capital city. This project, headed by George Eugène Haussmann, completely changed the architectural landscape of Paris, and in turn changed the social and economic formation of the city forever. Internationally, Napoleon III directed French military action in the Crimean War to limit Russian influence in Europe and additionally aided the Kingdom of Sardinia in a war against the Austrian Empire for Italian independence. While all of this was happening, Napoleon III’s wife Empress Eugénie hosted events at the Tuileries Palace, inviting important figures in French society and some of Napoleon’s closest friends. In this committee, you will be a close associate of Napoleon III, attending events at the Tuileries Palace and mingling with fellow Parisian socialites with the goal of shifting the development of this young empire as you see fit.
