The Emperor’s New Groove: Pachacuti’s Council, 1440 AD
Pachacuti, originally the ‘spare’ prince of the Kingdom of Cuzco, has made a name for himself by toppling his enemies, safeguarding his kingdom, and becoming not only the “Earth Shaker,” but also the new ruler of the Inca Empire. However, since he has only just been crowned, Pachacuti is still getting into the groove of things and needs support to determine how to expand and administer his empire while dealing with plots against his life and crown. Thus, he has called on the leading generals, nobles, religious figures, and regional and local authorities of the empire to form his elite advisory council. Pachacuti’s advisors must weather the challenges of governing such a large, multiethnic state, which contains an amalgamation of different peoples neither fully integrated with nor fully loyal to the empire. At the same time, members of the council might be tempted to take advantage of the empire’s heterogeneous constituency and wavering loyalties for their own gain. The council will have the freedom to shape elements of this Andean society—such as its transportation, agricultural, and economic systems—how they see fit. While exciting, the ability to create change also carries the risk of consequences, which might be exacerbated by faults and fractures within the council. Will Pachacuti and his council be able to climb to even greater power and continue enjoying the view from the top? Or will they tumble down and plunge into defeat?
Julia Ferreira
Chair
Julia is a fourth year majoring in Political Science and pursuing UChicago’s joint BA/MA program in international relations. She grew up in South Florida with Brazilian parents, so she is very saddened by the lack of real beaches in Chicago. (Lake Michigan’s “beaches” do not count!) Julia serves as the Co-President of UChicago’s International Development Society and will be chairing a committee for MUNUC, UChicago’s high school conference. In her free time, she loves drawing, playing volleyball, and reading Webtoons (she no longer has the attention span for books). At ChoMUN last year, Julia served as a Crisis Director for Could Could Have Seen This Coming? Federal Senate of Brazil, 2015. She also had a great time Chairing MUNUC 35’s Friends and Advisors of Empress Matilda committee. In previous years, she served as an Assistant Chair for the ChoMUN committee Sharing is Caring: Communist International, 1917-1965 and Chaired Simcity: Lagos State Government, 2000. She is thrilled to return to Chairing at ChoMUN this year, especially alongside her excellent co-execs and ACs!

Andrew Bailey
Crisis Director
Andrew Bailey is a third-year majoring in History and Math with a specialization in Economics. He is from Greenwich, Connecticut, and has enjoyed the change of pace from a small-ish town to a big city like Chicago. Andrew discovered his passion for MUN in college, and served as a frontroom AC last year on the crisis committee No Time to Wine: Pinot Noir and the Sour Grapes of the Burgundian Succession, 1477. He also served on the MUNUC crisis committee Friends and Advisors of Empress Matilda as a backroom AC. Outside of Model UN, Andrew enjoys reading about medieval history, playing the piano, and watching old gay movies. Andrew is super excited to be a Crisis Director for this committee!
He can be reached at agbailey@uchicago.edu with any questions, concerns, or gay movie recommendations.
