The International Labor Organization (ILO)
For decades, the International Labor Organization (ILO) has been dedicated to protecting the rights of workers all over the world and in every sector. Despite the great work that has already been done, there is still much to address. In this committee, delegates will be tasked with solving two issues that have been challenging the ILO for several years, if not decades. They will be addressing how to protect workers in a sector that, by nature, can’t be traditionally regulated and how we can navigate a transition to sustainability, while maintaining the rights of workers. This committee’s debate may form answers to critical questions, including the following: how should the world address the role of informal economies in generating income, while balancing concerns about exploitation? To what extent should we take a country’s economic interests into consideration? How can we navigate an economic change without negatively affecting vulnerable workers? This committee’s two topics are broad and nuanced, and we hope they lend to productive and insightful discussion.
This will be a single-delegation committee. Position papers are not required.
Naimisha Chakravadhanula
Chair
Naimisha Chakravadhanula is entering her second year in the College (though it will be her fifth year in Model UN). By day, she is an aspiring Political Science and Business Economics double major involved with several organizations across campus, but by night, she is a passionate artist and avid consumer of figure skating drama.
Naimisha has been competing and chairing since high school, and is currently a part of UChicago’s Collegiate Team as a (primarily) GA Delegate, so she’s all the more excited to do even more MUN in ChoMUN! Last year, Naimisha served as an Assistant Chair for One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for the Proletariat: The Soviet Space Program at ChoMUN XXVIII.
Naimisha is excited and honored to be your chair for the ILO committee, and if you have any questions, you can reach out at naimishac@uchicago.edu.
Benjamin Wu
Chair
Benjamin Wu is entering his fourth year at the University of Chicago this autumn, pursuing an interdisciplinary academic path with majors in Biochemistry, Economics, Global Studies, and Human Rights. He considers it an honor to serve as your Committee Chair in the ILO committee for the upcoming ChoMUN 29. Previously, Ben was an EAC for Merchant Madness at ChoMUN XXVIII.
Beyond the classroom, he’s actively involved in immunology and biomedical research at the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery, where he studies the dynamic relationship between the human host and intestinal microbiota, particularly the role of HSP 25. He’s also a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, the world’s oldest professional business fraternity, and competes as an épéeist on the UChicago Fencing Team. Outside of academics, you can find him chasing sunsets on his motorcycle, building Star Wars LEGO sets, or experimenting with bold recipes in the kitchen.
