Havana Ooh Na Na: The Republic of Cuba, 1940

It is 1940 in Havana, Cuba. The weather is nice and stable, but the political landscape is definitely shifting. Cuba adopted a new constitution that was perceived as progressive. This constitution guaranteed labor rights and land reforms. However, the gap between these revolutionary ideals, backed by the new constitution, and the political reality created tensions and made Cuba face major political, economic, and global challenges. This committee will closely explore the dynamics between the influential local figures in Cuba at that time, navigating a country full of potential and opportunities. In reality, the 1940 election saw Batista rise to power, only to later sideline many of the very constitutional reforms he once championed, laying the groundwork for his eventual dictatorship. But in this committee, history is malleable, and delegates have the opportunity to shape a different path for Cuba. With high global tensions mainly influenced by WW2, and domestic pressure mainly characterized by a tense political and economic situation, the delegates will assume the responsibility of making Cuba thrive. Will they preserve the fragile democracy or set the stage for a fierce revolution?
