Commission on the status of women (csw)
Topic: Lowering Maternal Mortality Rates
Dedicated to promoting women’s and girls’ rights globally, the Commission on the Status of Women works to establish international standards of gender equality. Throughout recent decades, the CSW has addressed diverse challenges ranging from justice and social infrastructure to innovation and technology. This committee session will focus on a critical aspect of women’s healthcare: lowering maternal mortality rates. Despite significant medical advancements over the past century, maternal mortality remains a pressing global challenge. While the World Health Organization estimates that more than 90% of maternal deaths are preventable, hundreds of thousands of women continue to face life-threatening health issues and medical difficulties during pregnancy and childbirth each year, particularly in underdeveloped regions. This committee will explore maternal mortality through the lenses of healthcare access, gender inequality, global aid distribution, and social stigma. Delegates will be challenged not only to recognize the urgency of the issue but also to propose sustainable solutions that address both the immediate causes of maternal mortality and the broader structural inequalities in the long term.
This will be a single-delegate committee. Position papers are not required.
SNEHA KUMAR
CHAIR
Sneha Kumar is a third-year double majoring in Law, Letters, and Society and History! She is eager to chair CSW with you all this year. Last year, she had the pleasure of chairing ECOFIN. She also competes on UChicago’s MUN Team, so she understands the excitement and nervousness some of you may be feeling as you prepare for conference.
Some fun facts about her: She’s originally from Princeton, New Jersey. She’s a big fan of TV shows ranging from The Bear to The West Wing, and her favorite sport to play/watch is water polo!

Ariel Dai
chair
Ariel is entering her second year at UChicago, where she studies Mathematics and Economics. Originally from Shanghai, China, this will be her second year in ChoMUN, after serving as an Assistant Chair for the International Labor Organization at ChoMUN XXIX. She will also chair the African Union at MUNUC 39 this year. Outside of Model UN, Ariel is involved in many other organizations across campus, like the Institute of Politics. Beyond academics, she enjoys literature and poetry, afternoon walks in Shanghai, and long conversations with friends. She is also an unapologetic fan of The Big Bang Theory.

Mia Sullivan
Chair
Mia Sullivan is a third-year student at UChicago studying Economics and Political Science. She’s staffed both MUNUC and CHOMUN committees for the past few years and loves the mix of chaos, creativity, and late-night problem-solving that comes with conference weekends. When she is not doing Model UN, she’s probably searching for a good New York bagel (impossible in Chicago), training for a marathon, or planning her next trip instead of doing work. She’s a strong believer that every committee problem can be solved with good communication and enough coffee.
